I went on a small Victorian politics rant
last night, and I actually got excited.
Was I born in the wrong era?
What I would give to be a fly on the wall in the Commons between 1837 - 1876
aramisrashard asked: Well I feel like I should know by now but I'm unsure. As you know America has two major contemporary parties and that is Republican and Democrat. I feel as though im somewhat of a centrist since I have matters in both parties in which I agree asn disagree with. I hope that doesnt sound too horrible haha.

The Alternative Vote
I promised someone here an explanation of my opposition.
In a nut shell - it annoyingly doesn’t make sense.
To understand my opposition to AV, you must understand how, at it’s most basic level, our election system works. Each of the 650 constituencies elects 1 MP, the Party with the most MP’s forms a Government - lovely and simply.
Now, people who argue for electoral reform...
aramisrashard asked: I know that I'm asking a lot but I'm really interested in our generation beimg interested in politics. I, myself was strongly interested in pursuing the American presidency but latley I think for now I will pursue a Senate seat and think later on presidency as I want to focus on business as well. So I say all that to what is your ultimate goal

michaelfootssexylegs asked: Just read your post about running for election - wow! Are these local elections in 2012? I presume you'd ideally run as a Labour candidate, but do you have to seek a party nomination to do that? Sorry, I am going to bombard you with questions because I find it fascinating! Fair play to you for running at such a young age. I worked on the campaign of a local candidate in the council elections...

thethingsthatpeoplesay asked: Not really a question, but more of a statement. I always read your posts, and I've bought several books that you recommend. I can see you're trying very hard to break into politics and I just wanted to say that from what I can see, you have a bright, successful career ahead of you. There are going to be setbacks in whatever path of life, and politics is one of the toughest. Determination...

Rules for Radicals: Prologue
God I love the internet - everyone, read this
The Revolutionary force today has two targets, moral as well as material. Its young protagonists are one moment reminiscent of the idealistic early Christians, yet they also urge violence and cry, “Burn the system down!” They have no illusions about the system, but plenty of illusions about the way to change our world. It is to this...

I need to post more
seeing as lots of very interesting political things have happened.
However, I got Blair’s biography and Rules for Radicals for Christmas, so I’ve been a little pre-occupied.
I’m also complete in love with Victorian era speeches again - currently reading what some of the best politicians this country has ever seen, were saying about House of Lords reform. I’ve firmly come...
Academically
I’m not the brightest.
But, knowing that House of Lords reform is likely to become an issue next year, I’m actually excited.
So much so, I’m reading speeches from the late 19th Century by people like Disraeli, Gladstones, Dilke, Bradlaugh, Sir Randolph Churchill and others.
Just proves you don’t need A-Levels to be academic - they are just a frustrating formality (in my...

Peter Bone MP, remarkable
Mr Peter Bone (Wellingborough) (Con): I have a lot of respect for the Minister; he is one of the most able in the House. [Hon. Members: “ Hear, hear.”] However, it was not his best speech.
The hon. Member for Rhondda (Chris Bryant) made a point about emergency measures, but the Minister did not call the Bill an emergency measure—he just said that it is an important Bill and that it be would...
Want to know what I think?
or anything else.
ask me?
Victorian Politics was incredible
I’ve been reading up on Gladstone and Disraeli again and It honestly gives me goosebumps.
Victorian politics is literally one of the most fascinating things to study.
It’s such a shame politics isn’t like that any more.

“‘Release your potential’. Now that’s a very very bad idea. You should stay away from your potential, leave it completely alone. You’ll mess it up. It’s potential; leave it. And anyway its like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think. Don’t look at it. Leave it as a locked…
An inspiring political story
I posted this back in April, but I just read it again and it had the same effect on me as when I first learnt about it.
In 1837 a young flamboyant former radical was elected for Parliament for the Tories. By the time of the 1841 general election he thought he’d proved himself worthy of Government, however the new Tory Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, thought otherwise. He justifiably ignored...
Time to name and shame the bastards
Please excuse my french.
Here is a list of people I have lost all respect for, who I previously had quite a lot:
Danny Alexander - Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Norman Baker - Under Secretary of State for Transport
Sir Alan Beith - Former Deputy Leader of the Lib Dems
Gordon Birtwistle
Tom Brake
Jeremy Browne - Foreign Office Minister
Malcolm Bruce - Former Leader of the Scottish Lib...
Simon Hughes MP
Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats has just gained my respect - impressive for a Lib Dem at the moment. He said in a BBC interview:
I have a duty to listen to my local party members and my supporters in my constituency, and they have asked me, on this occasion, to rebel against and break the coalition agreement… They believe that’s important for our community and important...
What to do with my third vote?
I turned 18 in January and proudly voted Labour - Richard Burden MP and Labour - Chris Hillcox on May 6th.
I’m faced with 2 more votes this May - maybe. One of them is a definite as the Local Elections as due on May 5th 2011, whereas the referendum on AV is possibly being moved. I know that I will be voting “No” on the AV referendum of reasons I will state in another post...
Poor Ed.
The Coalition Government hasn’t been more fragile than it is now. One of it’s partners is on the verge of a breakdown and the Tories are even shredding one or two supporters.
This was the best opportunity to kick the Coalition while it was down and Ed failed. It is for that reason I believe the Labour elected the wrong Leader and we should quickly correct our mistake.
Cameron is...
siomnesegonon asked: I think you confuse things a bit. The traditional conservatism is not related to the neoliberal policies of Thatcher. I suggest the reading of the works of Roger Scruton for a better understanding.
siomnesegonon asked: I do not understand how anyone can be a labour activist. The traditional conservative doctrine is more adjusted to reality.
If there is anything
you want to my know about me or ask my opinion on any event
drop me an ask
I’m in that kind of mood.
David Davis MP,
the former Conservative leader candidate - lost out to Cameron in 2005 - has announced, along with fellow Tory MP Lee Scott, that he will vote against the motion to lift the cap on tuition to £9,000.
I would LOVE this motion to be defeated.
Found a very interesting article
on the Liberal Democrat problem.
So I copied it here:
Will any Libdems rebel on tuition fees vote? Here’s a list
by Tom Griffin December 6, 2010 at 9:01 am I have been taking a look at how individual Lib Dem MPs are likely to vote on tuition fees next Thursday.
Looking at all the indications available, I concluded that the MPs fell into four loose categories. I have listed 14 likely...
Tuition Fees
I’ve been doing some boring number crunching.
There are 650 MPs in the Commons. The Speaker of the House is independent and doesn’t vote in Commons Votes and the 5 Sinn Fein MPs never go to Parliament. So that means to have a majority in the Commons you need 322 MPs.
The Tories won 306, and the Lib Dems 57, giving the Government a comfortable majority of 39.
Now assuming all...
I hate it when
you see that someone is wrong on here and you’re powerless to do anything about it.
gaahh
This refers to someone saying that the ring finger is the ring finger because *fact* it has a vein in it that goes directly to your heart. Wrong.
The Romans believed there was. There isn’t actually one.
PEDANTS UNITE
Sorry for the non-politics related post - I just had to be said.
